Laboratory Equipment Manufacturer
Business Issue
This billion-dollar manufacturer's teams collaborate successfully to sell laboratory equipment all over the world. And yet, trust and cooperation were in short supply in one U.S. department. The group was attempting to reorganize and meet difficult business challenges, but turfmanship and other defensive behaviors were blocking the way. The department head had tried to inspire teamwork, but none of his traditional attempts had created long-lasting results.
Process
The Advantage solution was Promises, Promises, a creative team-building business simulation from Eagle's Flight. Twenty-five department employees representing various job functions participated in the Promises, Promises session. During the simulation, employee teams had to act as politicians and keep promises to their constituents to stay in power. To fulfill their promises, each team had to build relationships with other countries.Even reluctant employees dropped their defensive personas when they found themselves in a fast-paced world of intrigue requiring concerted team effort. The entertaining and non-threatening learning environment gave employees a chance to put antagonisms aside and "hold up a mirror" to see the real impact their behaviors were having on their department-and their customers. Employees also learned the value of building trust, sharing resources, and creating supportive relationships.
Result
Promises, Promises showed the employees how trust, listening, teamwork, and cooperation were critical to the success of their department. Many employees realized they weren't doing as much as they should to create a collaborative team environment. By taking on new roles during the simulation, employees were able to recognize the need for improved team behavior back on the job, and work toward achieving that goal. As a result, reorganization proceeded with a minimum of conflict and department employees became more productive partners to the customers they served.
