In this short video, Swee Cheang Lim of the National University of Singapore’s Institute of Systems Science describes a new generation of leaders that will need to possess strong business acumen and people skills (the horizontal) along with their discipline competence (the vertical). Lim’s specialty is the IT arena, but his insights benefit leaders everywhere. Example: Don’t force people with reticent personalities to create vast horizontal skills. These “small-hat T” leaders, by working in teams, can be just as effective as their “big T” counterparts.
