March Madness: Secrets of recruiting talent to fuel a high-performing team

One of the greatest coaches in the history of college basketball,
John Beilein talks about team-building with Advantage CEO Jon Hodge.

The real indicator of a great teammate, believe it or not, (was when) he wasn't playing, when he went to the bench, when the coach took him out… What was he doing? There's a talent to being a great teammate."

In basketball, as in business, high performance comes down to how well your team works together to accomplish great things. And John Beilein, a standout career basketball coach and one of the most widely respected collegiate coaches in history, knows a thing or two about building great teams.

During his long career, Beilein was the only active collegiate coach to have achieved 20-win seasons at four different levels. He built an impressive overall 843 career wins, including last year's stint as head coach for the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers.

Beilein was one of the greatest basketball coaches in University of Michigan history before leaving that position for the National Basketball Association in 2020. This year, he is sharing insights as a Big Ten Network game analyst, teaching leadership at Michigan, and speaking publicly.

Beilein recently joined Advantage Performance Group President and C.E.O. Jonathan Hodge for a conversation about how to recruit and build a great team as part of the Advantage national sales meeting. Beilein's brother, Joe, is an Advantage partner based in Saint Louis.

"It's amazing the similarities between what you do as a coach and what you do in the business world, whether it's recruiting, establishing relationships, role definition," Beilein says. "There's a lot of parallels there."
