AI for decision-making

“While generative AI can provide information
it does not inherently yield knowledge.
– Tom Golway

Hewlett Packard Enterprise‘s chief technologist Tom Golway may have stated the obvious in his cautionary LinkedIn article last May on how to increase the integrity of AI-generated information, but his words are a critical reminder for us all as we explore the rapidly expanding realm of generative artificial intelligence and its increasingly profound effects on our work and in our lives.

In a similar vein, while it can’t make decisions for us, generative AI can improve our ability to make those decisions well, according to our thought leader partners Brent Snow and Sean Murray at 10,000 Feet, the company behind the popular Decision Mojo learning experience (along with Interplay and The Inclusive Leader).

In a new blog post on our website, they offer 8 ways to use generative AI to improve your decision-making.

Tips aside, the authors acknowledge, generative AI is a double-edged sword that brings inherent risks with its benefits, and it’s important that we as humans become familiar with these.

The risks: “There will always be a need for some degree of Human-In-The-Loop (HITL) involvement in most life-impacting and truly strategic decisions because Gen AI can replicate the biases inherent in its training datasets and also be subject to occasional hallucinations.”

The benefits: “But the reality also is that very few of the decisions we make are unique. Gen AI can help us learn from similar prior decisions and apply that learning to our current decisions. It can provide useful insights and suggestions that can improve our decision quality. It can also free up time for the creative and uniquely human deliberation that leads to good judgment in those realms where AI can’t give us the answer.”

Many thanks to Brent and Sean for sharing their perspective with us. Get their 8 AI strategies here.
