According to a recent Gallup Workplace article, employers and their employees are in need of a relationship reset in 2024 due to evolving shifts in where and how we work. Budget cuts, team changes, and added responsibilities are leaving employees feeling stressed and disconnected.

And while hybrid work is stabilizing, Gallup’s research indicates that how leaders manage their employees influences their engagement and wellbeing much more than their work location, about 4 times as much.

To win in 2024, the article suggests, management needs to retool its strategies to support the following trends identified in Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace: 2023 Report:

  1. Worker stress remains at a record high.
  2. Engagement is slowly recovering, but remote workers in particular are feeling disconnected to their organization’s mission and purpose.
  3. Leaders are restoring trust by improving communication, supporting change, and inspiring confidence for the future.
  4. Managers are feeling the squeeze from increased responsibilities and poor work-life balance.
  5. Organizations need to optimize their hybrid work strategy now that it has become the norm for remote-capable workers.
  6. Hybrid culture has distinct challenges organizations need to master in terms of communication, collaboration, and relationship-building in order to fully realize its advantages of offering the greater flexibility that workers crave, improving their wellbeing and engagement, reducing turnover, and expanding the talent pool.

These trends aren’t surprising, but they are clear indicators that the workplace isn’t what it used to be, and there’s no going back.
