The high cost of toxic cultures

According to a Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) report commissioned in July 2019, toxic workplace cultures have driven 20% of U.S. employees out of their jobs in the past 5 years — at a turnover cost greater than $223 billion. 

“We have reached a cultural tipping point in the workplace,” SHRM CEO Johnny C. Taylor Jr. writes in the report’s foreword. “What became clear is that a bad workplace culture can derail an organization, creating a toxic atmosphere that leaves employees frustrated and produces a very real bottom-line impact.”

On the other hand, he says, “organizations that build a great workplace culture will ultimately win the war for talent, innovating and growing for years to come.”
